Saving Fuel While You Drive

Petrol prices seem to rise and rise, and there is no sign of this stopping. So we are more likely to be guilty of playing fuel Russian roulette and dicing with how much petrol we have left in the engine before it dies completely.

But groups like the AA and the RAC are calling on drivers to be more astute when it comes to petrol levels, as it could cost you a lot of money should your car run out of petrol.

There is a layer of sediment at the bottom of your fuel tank, and as your car gets lower on petrol, this is churned into the internal mechanisms of the vehicle. This can clog vital elements like the fuel injectors or the filter, meaning that they bung and stop the vehicle. Some cars also use petrol as a way of maintaining the heat in the car, and therefore if the fuel levels runs really low then it can cause the car to overheat. Driving bodies recommend that you keep a quarter of a tank of petrol in the car to make sure that you are not causing damage to your vehicle.

To save on fuel you can implement techniques like minimising stopping and starting as much as possible, and maintaining an optimum speed to ensure that you are driving at the correct fuel efficiency. If there is a red light coming up then cruise into it rather than driving at speed and then stopping suddenly, and this will reduce the amount of strain on the engine, therefore costing you less in petrol. Once you are able to preceed with your journey, ease gently on to the accelerator, and this way you wont rev the engine or use any excessive petrol.

The US department of energy reports that aggressive driving behaviours such as the ones mentioned above can cause you to waste thirty percent of your fuel. Think about how much that will cost you on a weekly basis.
